Die Geltinger Birk ist somit ein dynamisches Ökosystem, das durch natürliche Prozesse und menschliche Maßnahmen geprägt ist und einzigartige Naturschönheiten bietet. Seit 1952 ist auch die eingedeichte Kuhlenkoppel südlich des Birknacks Teil des Schutzgebiets, und 1986 wurde die Fläche um Wiesen, das Wäldchen der Alten Plantage und eine 300 Meter breite Wasserfläche zwischen Birknack und Falshöft erweitert.
